Where to sleep by the sound
Where you stay often decides the trip budget more than the toll does. Malmö is on average clearly cheaper than Copenhagen — and sits five minutes past the toll station.

Malmö or Copenhagen?
If you arrive by car, Malmö usually means a cheaper bed and easier parking. From the Lernacken approach it is five minutes into the centre, and 35 minutes from there to København H on the Öresundståg — enough for a full day in Copenhagen without paying Copenhagen rates overnight.
Copenhagen pays off the other way round: if you come without a car, or want an early departure from Kastrup airport. The airport sits directly at the bridgehead, the old town ten minutes away.
Count the toll in: two nights in Malmö instead of Copenhagen often save a couple more than one return crossing costs.

The Malmö neighbourhoods
Hyllie is closest to the bridge: new-build hotels by the arena, its own station, and the point where Swedish border checks happen on the train. Handy for one night before driving on, thin on street life.
The centre and Gamla Väster give you old-town lanes, restaurants and Malmö C on the doorstep — the best choice if you want to leave the car and commute.
Västra Hamnen around the Turning Torso is quieter and newer, looking across the sound at the bridge. Limhamn to the south-west is a former fishing village with a short hop to Lernacken.

Copenhagen: where it is worth it
Indre By is expensive, but everything is walkable. Vesterbro behind the main station is cheaper and full of places to eat, Nørrebro cheaper still and further out.
Amager and Kastrup are the driver’s choice: five minutes from the tunnel portal, and no need to enter a city centre where parking is expensive and the streets are built for bicycles.

Common questions about staying
Is Malmö really cheaper than Copenhagen?
As a rule yes, especially in high season and for late bookings. Compare both maps for your dates — during trade fairs in Hyllie the ratio can flip.
Does it work to sleep in Malmö and visit Copenhagen by train?
For two people, almost always: the Öresundståg runs every 20 minutes during the day, takes 35 minutes and costs less per person than one crossing by car.
Can I park at the hotel for free?
Often yes in Malmö outside the centre, almost never in Copenhagen. Check before booking — Copenhagen parking fees quickly exceed the bridge toll.
